In Hawthorne' texts, ambiguity is not only a form of narration, but a motif of representation as well. This paper is mainly an analysis of Hester Prynne, the heroine of The Scarlet Letter, from the perspective of feminism. Through the varying meanings of the scarlet letter "A", Hester questions the conventional patriarchal signifying system of "A"-"Adultery". Hester tends to defy the man-centered authority in the patriarchal Calvinistic society. Allowing the signifier "A" to generate different meanings in different contexts, Hawthorne subverts the authority of male discourse, reconstructs a "her" story recording a repentant sinner's spiritual odyssey, and thereby speaks differently in history.
