Aging is a complex regulatory process, involving telomere alterations, DNA damage, DNA methylation and cellular oxidation. Many theories have been proposed to explain the aging process. However, telomeres are supposed to play a important role in cellular aging, and the telomere hypothesis of cell aging is becoming hot spot. Here we have reviewed the structures and functions of telomere-telomerase and the association between telomere-telomerase and aging/age, which will manifest impotant theorical and practical significance in antiaging. In addition, estimating age of humans based on telomere shortening will display enormous applicational prospect in forensic medicine.
