The author argues that the use of metaphors as the most essential figure of speech applied in literature betrays the idiosyncrasy and creative imagination of its creator and/or user. With its powerful cognitive function, the metaphor expresses the reader with its novelty, subtlety, and vividness. Then the author compares and re-evaluates methods of rendering metaphors put forward respectively by two scholars, Liu Chongde and Newmark. Finally, the author tentatively recommends five rules frequently applied in literary translation, both English-Chinese and vice versa, provided that some naturalization is accompanied in the process.
