The Chinese domestic 2-wheeler market is currently dominated by commuter type single cylinder 4-stroke machines of approximately 150 mL or below. These machines are popular as basic transportation due to their low cost, ease of use, low maintenance and adequate performance both in and out of urban areas. Euro Ⅲ exhaust emissions legislation is being introduced in Europe in 2006 and is due to be introduced in China in 2008. Manufacturers of these machines, and higher technology machines now being developed, are facing a significant technical challenge to enable these bikes to comply with this new legislation, whilst maintaining their attractiveness to the customer in terms of cost and functionality.
