The essence of the academic disputes over Islam and democracy is about whether democracy is apt for the Middle East region, and how to evaluate the role Islam plays in the region's democratization process. Judging from social values and the views of history, contradictions and compatibilities coexist between Islam and democracy. Influences of Islam on democracy can be characterized by uncertainties, which can be used either to support some concepts of democracy, or to oppose the base on which democracy depends. Through influencing society, politics, economy, culture etc, Islam may promote or hamper the democratic process. However, in the process of democratization in the Middle East Islamic states, Islam is neither the only effecting factor, nor the decisive one.
