近代以来,中国原有的慈善思想受外力的冲击和影响,由传统向近代嬗变,最终形成了具有崭新内涵的慈善思想。教会在华兴办的慈善机构,是中国人了解西方社会慈善事业最直接的途径;西学报刊的传播,使国人对西方各国慈善福利事业有了清晰的了解;部分中国人海外的亲身见闻促使人们对于慈善的认识达到一个较高的水平。以洪仁王干、康有为、孙中山为代表的有识之士在向西方学习的过程中,也学习他们的慈善与社会福利思想,形成了各自的慈善福利观。这时期我国慈善福利观也呈现出古今贯通,中西汇聚的特点,并影响和促使了慈善事业向近代化与制度化的方向迈进。
