对于性,西方流行着一种性压抑假说。性压抑假说把自17世纪以来的西方性史读解成压抑不断增大的编年史。而在福柯看来,存在着另一部现代性历史,这是一部有关性的话语、权力、知识生产的历史。为此,福柯分析了性话语和围绕性的权力机制。他在《认知的意志》中想要表达的主题是:性自17世纪以来,不但没有屈从于压抑机制,相反却服从于一个煽动不断增大的机制。各种作用于性的权力技术没有屈从于一个严格挑选的原则,而是服从于一个多元形式的性经验的散播和移植的原则。
