This article is the result achieved through a close reading of Professor Xu Zhongjie＇ s translation of Tang poems and Song Ci - poems into English. He never expounded his ideas or principles concerning translation, which makes it difficult to study his thoughts. He did some work in presenting Chinese poems to the western readers. Yet he is not much studied. After a close reading of his translation, we can draw such a conclusion that he followed these principles： translating poetry in the form of poetry, presenting a beauty in sound and rhyme, line-expansion, interpretational translation and intercultural purpose.
