As the most influential periodical during the 1898 Reform period in the late Qing Dynasty, Shiwu bao(Chinese Progress) exerted its influence on the reading public in complex and varied ways. Everyone understood and interpreted the information it provided in a different way varying with their personal concerns and intellectual stand, which shaped personal knowledge of the outside world and the self, and resulted in a wide spectrum of responses and actions. Seen as a whole, the readers' sentiments toward Shiwu bao as a news medium actually reflected the confrontation and contradiction of ideas and values in the public sphere.
