自然主义和反-自然主义是社会科学哲学中最著名的论争。20世纪60年代以来,随着逻辑实证主义的衰落,社会科学中的自然主义倾向也逐渐处于劣势。而“批判实在论”的兴起为超越自然主义和反-自然主义的局限性提供了可能,并在此基础上复兴社会科学中的自然主义。
