摘要
Being is always the key category of western ontology, and is indeed the foundation of entire western philosophy. It is very important to maintain correct understanding of the category. However, there exists a dispute over the two different translations of the category in the circle of Chinese-speaking community for a long time, namely, “Cunzai”[to be as substantive verb]or“Shi”[to be as copula]. The author tries to illustrate the significance of the category under the historical context of western philosophical theories. In the paper, the author discusses four problems: the category Being; Being and copula; Being and existence; the linguistic analysis of Being and Chinese translations; which it makes clear that Being as gerund of to be, takes a substantive sense when it serves as the name of the category.
