This paper is intended to trace the development of the characters of the English novels over the past four hundred years, and discuss novelists' views of the character as well as the roles of the characters in the text. While exploring the relationship between the characters and the texts, and between the characters and the plots, the author of this paper reflects on some deep-rooted problems.
