Hawthorne, the American romantic writer, has always enjoyed a high literary status and reputation as a classic writer, but his literary importance also lies in the aesthetic modernity of his literary creation. With his keen insight he has speculated in a negative way on modernity, that is, the threat of the materialized civilization to man and its control of man. He shows people’s loss of self, alienation and solitude and criticizes man’s evil nature. Moreover, he attempts to find, from his unique aesthetic perspective, a way to get rid of alienation: he hopes to return to his native land and nature so that he can live poetically in his spiritual homeland.
