Empty Word Preference of English and Content Word Preference of Chinese:Its Motivations and Its Implications for Translation

英、汉两种语言在虚词的使用上有着显著的差异,根据这一差异,英语可称作“虚用型”语言,汉语则可称作“实说型”语言。这种差异的形成有一定的原因。研究这种差异对于两种语言间相互转译具有启示意义。

Sharp difference exists in the use of empty words between the English language and the Chinese language, where English is featured with empty- word preterence, and Chinese with content word preference. The present paper makes a positive research into this difference, analyzes its motivations, and discusses its implications for the translation between the two languages.
