Textual cohesion is an important part of discourse rhetoric. It is in textual cohesion that hypotactic English and paratactic Chinese form a sharp contrast. In English-Chinese translation the structure of a text can be determined only through analysis of its function, whereas in Chinese-English translation the function of a text is revealed through analysis of its structure.
