This paper reexamines the early 1980s series of Wang Meng＇s fictions which demonstrate his steadfast ＂young communist spirit,＂ claiming that such steadfastness is tinged with a lurking anxiety which Wang himself is not unaware of, but which he has managed to evade in the traditional spirit of ＂forgetting＂ the body while retaining the ＂roaming＂ of the soul.
