"Beauties" is a vital prototype in ancient Chinese poetry. There exist in "beauties" multiple eormotations in the writing of "dreams for beauties"- beauties as unity of love and beauty, amorous beauties, symbolic beauties, and prostitutes as lascivious beauties. In essence, "beauties" is the ideal object and symbol of a trinity of ancient men: desire, fame, and aesthetics. The writing of "dreams for beauties" grows out of a conflict between desire and ritual, and the common need for a psychological complement amongst ancient male poets.
