Buddhism was introduced into China around the beginning of the Christian Era. Combined with Chinese culture, it became a new type of Buddhist culture with Chinese characteristics, greatly different from original Indian Buddhism. As a significant part of Buddhist culture, its statues left people many important subjects to research: How did the statues spread into China from India? When were Chinese Buddhist statues brought about? How did early statues come into being and develop and with what features? Unfortunately, although there are some records on the initial stage of Buddhism, researchers failed to discover sufficient data belonging to the time before the Eastern Han, and the above questions remain in an enigmatic state.
