Objective To analyze the clinical characteristics of pityriasis rosea and their correlation with human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) infection to improve the diagnosis of this disease. Methods The clinical data of 200 cases of pityriasis rosea were retrospectively analyzed and the attack was summarized. At the same time, PCR method was used to detect the DNA HHV-6 in serum, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, skin lesions and saliva from 44 patients with acute pityriasis rosea. Results Seasonal statistical analysis on the attacks of 200 patients with pityriasis rosea revealed that the incidence of pityriasis rosea showed no significant difference among the seasons of spring, summer and autumn (P〉0.05). In some patients, there were atypical skin lesions, distribution and spontaneous symptoms. In addition, PCR indicated that in 44 cases of acute pityriasis rosea, some had HHV-6 infection. Conclusion Besides spring and autumn, summer is the peak season of pityriasis rosea also. Pityriasis rosea presents atypical lesions, locations and severe pruritus. The pathogenesis of pityriasis rosea may be related with HHV-6 infection.
