A Discussion of Palace Architectural Style in the Qianlong Reign Period of the Qing Dynasty

康熙、雍正、乾隆以及嘉庆朝所建的宫殿,在传统礼制规定内,其宫殿环境、建筑布局及艺术等力求贴近现实生活。表现出创造惬意的环境和方便舒适的建筑、满足皇帝的理政及生活要求等一系列特性。这也构成了“乾隆时期”宫殿建筑的整体风格。

Although palaces built in the Qianlong reign period were constructed in conformity to traditional ritual regulations, there was also a strong demand to break free of these imposed restraints and to pursue an architecture closer to the functional needs of everyday life. In the overall layout of the buildings there was free play within the strict con?nes imposed by symmetry around a central axial grid. There was a move from scattered individual buildings to grouped arrangements of buildings. Interiors and exteriors of buildings were opened up or closed off, and decorated in many various ways to conform to the function of the spaces themselves. External vistas were constructed in an extremely elaborate manner that can be seen as programmatic. These various features of the palace architecture coalesced in the creation of fanciful palace environments and convenient and comfortable buildings which together form the totality of style of palace architecture in the Qianlong period.
