Zhang Ai-ling＇ s miserable family life and her experience in the war period made all the characters in her novels live in loneliness and isolation. The employment of such conventional images as mirrors and the moon subtly expresses the emptiness and desperation of the protagonists and their specific psychological state which helps to form a “cold and miserable” world in her novels.
