This study uses geochemistry tracing to constrain on provenance of bronzes from Heying archaeological site. Tracing ancient copper of bronzes back to its source ore via trace-element analysis must combine quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis. In situ trace-element analysis conducted by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer ( ICP-AES ) confirms sample data of copper ores, copper ingots and slag from the ancient Tonglvshan mining site in Hubei province, Tongling and Nanling mining sites in Anhui province. According to geochemical principals, this study researches into chemical conduct and reallocating law of elements in metallurgical steps on the way from ore to metal. In smelting, some elements almost all run away with slag and some are most enriched in copper metal. We only select those elements enriching in copper metal as tracing elements of copper ore deposits. Based on the documents and geological data, we can draw a preliminary conclusion that the bronzes from Heying site are made of copper metal from copper ore deposits in Chu county.
