Almost immediately after its publication, Shakespeare's Hamlet became a literary classic. On the other hand, however, different and even conflicting interpretations have never stopped cropping up. Adopting a feminist stand, John Updike's novel Gertrude and Claudius tells a tale some critics regard as a prequel to Hamlet, showing a serious concern for the position and fate of women in a patriarchal society and providing a whole new interpretation that is uniquely that of the modern people.
