Study on Donggao's Buddhist Masters and the Place of Tonsure

东皋师父阔堂大文为杭州上塔伏虎禅院住持,东皋于1668年投其门下,1670年成为其嗣法弟子、曹洞宗寿昌派第三十五世。此系东皋禅师人生历程之最为重要的转折点和新起点,与尔后他艺术作品的内容、风格、情趣、成就及其对日本文化艺术的贡献等方面均有密切关联。

Donggao, an honorable Buddhist monk good at guqin, learnt from the abbot of Hangzhou Upper-tower Fuhu Buddhist Temple Kuotang Dawen in 1668. He accepted the master＇s Buddhist doctrine in 1670 and became the 35th generation of disciple of Shouchang faction Caodong sect. It is a most important turning point and new starting point in Master Donggao＇s life, relating closely with the content, style, aesthetics and achievement of his artistic creation as well as his contribution to Japanese culture and art.
