摘要 SERIOUS water shortages in Beijing, Tianjin and northern China generally are the impetus behind the ambitious South-to-North Water Diversion Project, whose aim is to divert water from the Yangtze River into North China. It is the biggest project of its kind in the world. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was the world’s first canal and, at16 times the length of the Suez Canal, is its longest.
