Zero Degree Writing: The Key to Translation

语际之间的翻译并不是一个简单的语言更换过程,它涉及到语言的风格和原作的主题;而直译与意译仅拘泥于语言的保留和舍弃,两者均无法涵盖翻译的全过程,因而也就不能称其为翻译的方法。翻译应该是一种零度的写作;翻译的成功取决于译者的态度,而非方法。

Translation is by no means a simple replacement of one language into the other; it involves language styles and themes. It is suggested that free and literal translation should not be regarded as methods of translation, since they only focus on the issue of word - remaining or word - abandoning, hardly covering the whole translating process. Translation is a sort of zero degree writing;its success lies in the translator＇ s attitude,but not methods.
