The paper mainly discourses important significance of optical communication in the nowadays communication, the main characteristics of dense wavelength division multiplexes （ DWDM ） and its development is going to he high capacity, long distance, flexible access way, all optical network and optical exchange. The goal of this paper will be to help us know the development tendency of optical communication, and operate the guidance and reference in the production and practice.
