A Re-study on the Religious Factors in the Decline of Stone of Relief

汉画像石发展的前提有两个,一是特殊的宗教要求,一是特殊的宗教表现要求。前者主要集中体现在长生愿望上,由此而产生了西王母信仰;后者主要集中体现在祭祀的热情上。这两个前提在魏晋南北朝都发生了变化,因此画像石的发展受到了影响,最终走向衰亡。

There are two premises to the development of stone relief of Qin Dynasty： one is a special religious demand; the other is a special demand of religious demonstration. The former mainly lies in the desire for longevity which consequently brought into being the belief of Xiwangmu （ Grand Old Lady of the West） ; the latter mainly lies in the zeal of offering sacrifices. However, changes eceurred to these two premises in Wei, Jin, Northem and Southem dynasties, which produced great impact on the development of stone relief and led to the final decline.
