Wetlands are often an imporlant environments. Large-scale changes component of projects aimed at to existing hydraulic regimes must establishing attractive and sustainable often be made to achieve success with wetland enhancement and restoration projects. While these kinds of projects appear to be simple natural systems, they present to the engineer a complicated system and a dearlh of information needed to supporl proper engineering analyses and design. The engineer's job is to meet all of these sometimes conflicting requirements with a project design that provides for the needs of man and of nature, and can be built with funds and time available. This process was illustrated with the Bolsa Chica Lowlands Project, a large-scale hydrologic and wetland restoration project located in a heavily urbanized area near Los Angeles, California.
