The Expansion of Western Culture and Cultural "Westernization"

19世纪末,世界绝大部分地区都囊括在西方经济秩序、政治模式和文化系统之中,这个“泛西方化”潮流把整个世界联结为一个休戚与共的整体,使人类历史成为统一的世界历史。这个“泛西方化”时代,对中国文化产生了深远的影响,其他文化也对西方文化扩张有不同的反映。因此,我们除了历史的眼光外,还必须具有这种洲际的文化展望,才能把中国文化在现代转型中的阻滞力看清楚。

By the end of 19th century, most of regions in the world had been in the western economic order, political structure and cultural system. This cultural “westernization” integrates the world into a closely related and mutually dependent whole and thus makes the human history into a united history. It also exerts a profounnd influence on Chinese culture, although different culture may have different response to western cultural expansion. Therefore, in order to solve the problems in the process of Chinese cultural modernization, we need not only the historical insight, but also the inter-continental prospectus.
