Introduction (Sir) Tannatt William Edgeworth David (1858-1934) is recognised as probably Australia's greatest geologist. Born at St Fagan's, near Cardiff, Wales, he graduated from Oxford University in 1880 and studied briefly at the Royal School of Mines, London. He was influenced by the geologists Joseph Prestwich and John Judd, his relative William Ussher, and the romantic author and artist John Ruskin, who had a significant interest in geology.
