摘要 In the Confucian value system the core values like benevolence, propriety, righteousness and filial piety are all oriented in society. Many other ideas expounded by Confucian scholars all show the tendency to set a higher value on society at the expense of individuals. For example, the ideal of inward sagehood and outward kingly governance esteemed by Confucian scholars treats kingly service to society as the ultimate purpose of being a sage or a man of virtue. The value concepts, promoted by Confucianism, of benefit to the state and the kingdom, loyalty to the sovereign and devotion to the country all place duty to society first.
