近代湖南人才辈出,并且形成了前后相承的一个个人才群体,在百年中国近代化进程中作出了巨大贡献。以陶澍、魏源、贺长龄等为代表的湘系经世派积极倡导经世思潮和推行具有一定程度的资本主义性质的经世改革运动,并提出了“师夷”的口号,吹响了中国近代化的序曲;以曾国藩、左宗棠、郭嵩焘等为代表的湘军集团积极发动和参加洋务运动,迈出了中国近代化的第一步;以谭嗣同、唐才常、熊希龄等为代表的湖南维新志士是近代改革运动中的激进派,为中国近代化付出了生命的代价;以黄兴、宋教仁、蔡锷、陈天华等为代表的湖南资产阶级革命派和以谭延闿、杨度等湖南资产阶级立宪派在近代资产阶级革命运动和立宪运动中也表现突出,为推翻封建统治,实现近代资产阶级的民主共和作出了伟大贡献。中国近代化的脚步每前进一步,都离不开湖南人才群体的艰辛努力。

There were people of talent emerged in succession and a talent group had formed in Hunan Province who made great contribution to the modernization of China for nearly one hundred years. The Hunan talent people who administered state affairs such as Tao Shu, Wei Yuan,and He Changling who advocated ideas to administer county and reform movement of some capitalism and put forward slogans such as “to learn from foreign countries” which was the first preface of Chinese modernization. Zeng Guofan, Zuo Zhongtang and Guo Songtao were the representatives of Hunan military circles, who launched and participated westernization movement that started the first step towards Chinese modernization. Tan Sitong,Tang Chaichang and Xiong Xiling were representatives of Hunan reformists who took part in the reform movement of the Qing Dynasty; Huang Xing, Song Jiaoren, Cai E Chen Tianhua were the Hunan bourgeoisie revolutionaries; Tan Yankai and Yang Du and so on who were the activities of constitutional monarchy made great contribution to the collapse of feudalist rule and the bourgeoisie republic coming being. Hunan talent people made efforts to create Chinese modernization of history.
