Speech representation is closely related to the characterization, plot development, and even the thematic significance and aesthetic value of a fiction. But when translating fictions, a translator tends to neglect it because of the story itself. Hence we have the “deceptive equivalence”, which is far away from “adequacy of translation”. This paper, based on narratology and fictional stylistics and by contrasting different translations of The Awakening, a novel by American woman writer Kate Chopin, analyzes the importance of speech representation in translating fictions and demonstrates the impact made on “adequacy of translation” on account of the translator's negligence of speech representation.
