The Effects of Verb Salience on the Simple Past Marking in English Interlanguage

摘要 研究使用的语料是从国内四所大学120名非英语专业二年级学生中收集的120篇书面记叙文。结果发现,动词突显度与一般过去时变异有显著密切的联系。规则动词的一般过去时标记比例显著高于不规则动词。分析精简后的动词突显度详细分类发现,突显度假设分别在不规则动词和规则动词内部成立。突显度假设可以用认知心理学中的图形/后景理论加以解释。 This paper studies the effects of verb salience on the simple past marking in Chinese-English interlanguage, based on 120 written narratives collected from 120 college students of four universities. Verb salience is found to be significantly associated with the simple past variation. Regular verbs are significantly more marked in simple past than irregular verbs. Within both of them, the more salient verbs are the more likely they are marked in simple past, suggesting that the saliency hypothesis is generally supported respectively. This hypothesis is finally explained with figure/ground theory in cognitive linguisties.
