The Female Literature Consciousness of the Shen Clan of Wujiang

吴江沈氏家族是明清时期一个颇有声望的文化世家。不仅男性成员成绩卓著,女性文学也取得了长足的进步,先后有二十七位女性作家有诗词及戏曲作品流传。这同其家族的女性文学意识密切相关。他们具有“德才色”并举的进步的女性文学观,非常重视家族女性文学的刊刻和传播,在晚明女性文学中独树一帜,影响深远。

The Shen clan of Wujiang is a famous literature family in the south of China in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Not only did the male members obtain great success in literature, but the female members also made considerable literary achievements, as is shown by the fact that there are as many as twenty seven female writers whose poems and traditional opera works spread widely in the history of the Shen clan. This literary achievement by the females has a lot to do with the female literature consciousness in this clan. The Shen clan, laying equal stress on “virtue, talent, appearance”, held the progressive female literary viewpoint and paid great attention to the publication and dissemination of their female writings, which developed a school of their own and exerted far-reaching influence in the female literary history of Ming Dynasty.
