The field study was aimed at examining the effects of music tempo and group size on the eating time of college students in the cafeteria. The results showed that 1) music tempo had main effects on eating time; 2) the time spent by the single-person group was remarkably less than that by the multi-person group; 3) music tempo and group size had an interactive influence on eating time, and 4) in the singleperson group, there was a direct link between the tempo of the background music being played and the time the subjects spent——the faster the music tempo, the faster the subjects had their meals, but in the multi-person group, music tempo had no significant effect.
