厄恩斯特.奥古斯特.格特率先把语言学的关联理论应用于翻译研究,提出了关联的翻译观,指出翻译是一种言语明示-推理的阐释活动,也是一种言语交际行为。制约翻译的基本原则就是关联。译者应对原交际者明示的交际行为进行推理,寻找最佳关联性,再把这种关联性传递给译语读者,从而产生最佳语境效果。只有原交际者的意图和译语读者的需求在认知环境的相关方面与原文相似,才是成功的译文。

Ernst August Gutt first applied relevance theory to translation study. He points out that translation is an act of ostensive-inferential interlingual interpretation and of verbal communication. The basic principle constraining translation is the principle of relevance. A translator should presume the reporter＇s communicational act and search for optimal relevance that can be conveyed to the reader. A successful translation should be the intentions of reporter and the needs of reader resemble the original in relevant respects in cognitive environment.
