从《水浒传》前70回来看,零被句在判定标准上跟“被”字句主语的省略、句式的连续与不连续被动有关;从零被句跟其他“被”字句的关系上看,有些“被”字句在语义上与有无主语无关;从“被”字句的历史发展看,零被句跟“被”字的“遭受”义和“被”字句式的逐步定型有关;另外,零被句与某些特殊动词有关。
