Meanwhile, numerous new words and expressions that are familiar with VoIP come into being in telecom area, among whieh the most commonly used and represntative ones are softswich and IMS. The confusion of VoIP conception and the vagueness of its significance make the majority of telecom carriers puzzled and result in the unpractical propaganda in the market. This article firstly analyzes and describes the essential of VolP. Then it points out the relationship between VolP and softswitch together with the significance of VolP in NGN evolution. As a result, telecom carriers can haw a clearer watch on present challenges and opportunities to establish correct and complete VoIP strategy, for the process of NGN.
