Professor Robert Merton of Harvard University argues that the general functions of the financial system comprise of payments, lending and investing, pooling funds, allocating risk, providing information, and dealing with incentive issues. For bringing these functions into play, the financial system should be provided with the extensive abilities.The abilities that the financial system should possess consists of stabilization, adaptation, management, allocation of resources, transmission, liquidity, pricing, innovation and providing information.
