Besides the extended meanings incurred by the influences of the political ideology, it can be found that, through its discursive complex, a heroic narrative pattern is hidden in the novel of Midnight. Wu Sunfu bears, among others, the characteristics of the heroes in ancient Greek tragedies. An analysis of his destiny reveals that Wu Sunfu is in a tripartite dilemma, presenting to the readership a lofty tragic spirit. What is more, Wu Sunfu＇ s tragic destiny, too, implicitly conforms to traditional Chinese tradition view on vocation.
