The movemetn against three evils (corruption, waste and bureaucracy) and the movement against the five evils (bribery of government workers, tax evasion, theft of state property, cheating on government contracts and stealing economic information) produced unprecedented economic, political and ideological influences on the private sector of finance in Shanghai. It was in the movement against the three evils and the movement against the five evils that the private financial operations went into a precipitous decline and the traditional market rapidly shrank. The capitalists were shocked and frightened, and their employees were also shaken. The trade organizations were marginalized and could not operate normally. The movement against 'three evils' and 'five evils' objectively sped the process of transformation of the private finance in Shanghai from private ownership to joint state-private ownership. The private sector of finance in Shanghai as a trade had come to its historical end.
