The traditional Homeric hero is a man of noble birth and impressive appearance who fights bravely for his own honor, which is more important and valuable than life itself. The Homeric hero displays extraordinary courage and talents through his great achievements in the battles, and changes the destiny of history. This paper reveals Stephen Crane's redefinition of Heroism by analyzing Henry's (the hero in The Red Badge of Courage) performance in the battle field: confronting the most dangerous situation, the ordinary man reaffirms his self-value by plucking up enough courage to overcome his cowardice after realizing his own fragility and insignificance in the universe
