While narrative elements distinguish themselves by relating a series of events in the order in which they took place, non-narrative elements assume their own role in constituting a narrative structure. Analysis of EFL learners' monologues in testing context suggests that ( 1 ) topic differences may produce an effect on the style of narrating, but the basic elements remain more or less the same in the narrative structure; (2) the distinctive features of both narrative and non-narrative elements may help to have a better understanding of the learners' narrative discourse so that they can be employed to measure EFL learners' discourse competence, and their ability to sequence information in particular.
