作为一名语言文字工作者,邹韬奋认为语言是交际和思维的重要工具,是文化传播的重要手段。此外,在他看来,翻译的目的也是为了文化的交流,不管采用哪种译法,最主要的是要忠实于原作者的意图,要考虑到普通民众的需要。总之,邹韬奋从事语言文字工作的首要目的是服务于大众,服务于人民。从这一点说,他的语言应用观和当代应用语言学提出的“服务观”不谋而合。

As a man of letters,Zou holds that language is an important tool for communication and thoughts,and a major means of cultural transmission.Furthermore,in his opinion,the purpose of translation is also for the sake of cultural exchange.Whatever method is to be taken,the translation should be faithful to the source language,taking into account the demands of ordinary readers.In a word,the primary purpose of Zou's literary work is serving the people,in which sense,his opinion of language application coincides with the 'Service' notion of modern applied linguistics.
