A mistranslation of " óv(on)," a key term in Western philosophy, has resulted in the misunderstanding of its true and deep signification by the Chinese readers. To deal with this problem, we first offer an explication of this term in reference to its interpretations by Western philosophers. The discussion then leads us to propose that shi, a linking verb in modern Chinese, be used as the equivalent for " óv(on)." Not only will this translation minimize the loss or distortion of the key term's meaning in Western philosophical discourse, it is also likely to introduce a new mode of thinking into the Chinese culture.
