On Liu Xie's Perspectives for "Eulogy" and Advantages and Disadvantages of His Criticism on Eulogy Writing

刘勰对“颂”这种文体的认识有局限性。主要表现在以《诗经》之《颂》为正体而排斥其后颂体的发展;颂体的特征上依“颂”之名立义,而不顾颂体创作的客观实际。这种局限性主要是受其宗经观念的影响而导致的。

Liu Xie＇s perspectives for “Eulogy” had somewhat disadvantages which mainly appeared in consideration of “Eulogy” in “Songs of Poetry” as the legitimacy while repelled the development of coming eulogy writing. And the disadvantages manifested in deciding the meanings upon “Eulogy” titles and ignoring the objectives of eulogy writing mainly affected by his religious ideas.
