There are several issues must be confirmed in the research of university autonomy. Firstly, university autonomy is the core of the west university system. Secondly, the basic signification of university autonomy is self-government in terms of a whole university. Thirdly, historic research affords a foundation for the research of university autonomy. The forms of university autonomy system, such as scholar guild, corporation, and corporation-boards of trustees, successively come into being in the west. Its historical diversity will help to understand the essential of university autonomy.
