The demotion and exile was one of the most common punishments for the mandarins who either lost favor of the Emperor or made serious mistakes in their conducts of official affairs. Since Tang Dynasty, the ultimate career goal for many culture elites was to become a mandarin for the Empire. Inevitably many of them experienced the demotion and being sent to far away Provinces. During Tang Dynasty, mandarins were exiled to south provincial towns as their punishment. Jingzhou & Xiangzhou areas in Chuguo were the most popular place for the imperial court to exile the demoted mandarins. Two of the most famous poet mandarins exiled to Chu was Qu Yuan and Jia Yi. Qu-Jia and the poem style they developed during exile formed so called Qu-Jia Poem Sprit which was idolized by generations of poets ever since Tang Dynasty.
